When to have the engine checked
- The engine runs unevenly, hesitates, loses power

Timing belt and chain
Belt or chain, replaced as a set along with the rollers and the water pump. Fitting a new belt onto old rollers is the kind of saving that ends in exactly the same failure.

Head gasket, crankshaft seals, sump, rocker cover. An oil leak is rarely urgent in itself, but it is always worth knowing where it comes from — the same spot can later mean something considerably more expensive.

- Is it worth rebuilding the engine or better to sell the car?
- It depends on the cost of the repair relative to the value of the car, and on the condition of everything else: body, gearbox, suspension. We give you the figure and our own opinion, and you make the decision. Sometimes the honest answer is not to rebuild it.
- When should the timing belt be changed?
- According to the manufacturer's schedule for that specific engine, and not by mileage alone — rubber ages with time too. On a used car with no proof of a change, the belt is replaced straight away: the consequences of a failure are an order of magnitude more expensive.
- The engine is using oil. Does that always mean a rebuild?
- No. Common causes are valve stem seals, the crankcase breather system and leaking gaskets. Worn rings are only one possibility, and one that is checked with a compression test rather than by ear.
- Do you repair diesel engines?
- Yes, we work on both petrol and diesel engines.
- Do you carry out engine rebuilds?

- What does white smoke from the exhaust mean?
- From cold and in cold weather it is usually just condensation, and that is normal. Thick white smoke on a warm engine, together with disappearing coolant, is the classic sign of a failed head gasket. That is quick to check.
